Content-Based Instruction

The purpose of content based instruction (CBI) is for students to learn language through stimulating content. In this presentation, we look at the "what" and the "how" of CBI. At Kobe University's Department of Intercultural Studies, first-year students enroll in content-based English seminars. Marian Wang will talk about her seminar on immigration at Kobe University. The overall goal of the seminar is for students to do a comparative study of immigration patterns in Japan and the United States. Students listen to immigration stories on TED Talks (e.g., Tan Le) and organize field trips to Osaka/Kobe to learn more about immigration issues in Japan. The final project of the class is for students to give a short presentation on the immigration history of America and Japan.

The second speaker, Brent Jones, will outline how CBI is being used at Konan University, Hirao School of Management. Specifically, course outlines will be presented for two courses, Global Challenges for first-year students, and Japan Studies for second-year students. Participants will go away with a better understanding of CBI (the thrills and spills) and concrete ideas for getting started with their own CBI initiatives.
