ETJ Kobe May Meeting: Teach your students to read the right way!

Sunday, May 13th, 2007, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Jeff Lewis

Please note the NEW central Kobe location! KRAC Sannomiya Kobe Regatta Athletic Club.

Teach your students to read the right way! How do students learn to read English? Is learning to read a "natural" process? Is there a method of instruction that is better than others? English is confusing for both those trying to teach it and those trying to learn it, but with a little background information and some simple activities, your students can be on their way to automatic decoding and reading fluency (and we 'll even throw in writing as a bonus).

In this presentation, you will learn why there is one correct way to teach reading and how to teach the English phonetic system in an explicit, systematic manner. We will simplify the 40+ sounds of the English language into a basic code that students can learn in a couple of months, making the advanced code much easier. Half of the time will be spent giving teachers the background knowledge necessary to teach reading correctly, and the rest of the time will be spent on activities that will help your students immediately. And don?'t forget to bring your own favorite phonics activities for our roundtable share at the end!

Jeff Lewis currently teaches elementary and JHS English on Awaji Island. Before coming to Japan, he taught first and second grade for Detroit Public Schools. He holds Michigan state teaching certification and a Master's degree from Wayne State University.
