Nagoya-Gifu JALT invites you to an online professional development event exploring practical approaches to revision, retelling, and oral-presentation rehearsal in EFL education. This event features two presentations examining how teachers can help learners move beyond surface-level correction and develop greater confidence, autonomy, communication skills, and reflective learning. Participants will discover practical strategies for supporting both written and spoken language development across a range of EFL contexts and proficiency levels.
2:00-2:50 p.m. Editing and Rehearsing English Oral Presentations Using AI Tools: A Task-Based Language Teaching Approach

Abstract: This presentation introduces a task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach designed to help students edit and rehearse English oral presentations with AI support. Implemented in the fall semester of 2025, the approach has shown promising results in fostering independent learning and responsible AI use. It integrates AI into the post-writing stage through a student-AI-student workflow informed by Licklider's (1960) concept of human-computer symbiosis. In Phase 1, students independently proofread and revise their presentation scripts before consulting AI. They compare the AI-generated suggestions with their own revisions, reflect on the differences, and produce a final version. In Phase 2, students rehearse and record their presentations before using a checklist to assess volume, pacing, gestures, and eye contact. They then use AI to receive additional feedback on pronunciation, volume, and pacing. This framework demonstrates a practical approach to AI integration in EFL learning while supporting student autonomy, metacognitive reflection, and responsible technology use.
Bio: Dr. Manu Avenido teaches Practical English at Kyoto Sangyo University and Ritsumeikan University. A former ALT with TESOL certification, his research focuses on literacy, literature, and ESL/EFL education in Japan and ASEAN.
3:00-3:50 p.m. Rewrite to Retell: The IMPAR3 Cycle for Smarter EFL Writing

Abstract: This workshop introduces IMPAR3 (Introduce-Model-Practice-Apply-Revise-Rewrite-Retell), a recursive framework that helps EFL students move beyond surface correction toward deeper revision and academic writing development. Drawing on genre-based pedagogy (Martin & Rose, 2008), Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014), and process writing (Flower & Hayes, 1981; Hyland, 2003), the session shows how students can revise by reorganizing, elaborating, and reconstructing meaning rather than simply fixing grammar mistakes. Participants will explore practical strategies from Japanese university writing classes, including coded feedback, collaborative revision, caveman outlining, paragraph reconstruction, and retell-to-rewrite activities. The workshop emphasizes revision and retelling as central learning tools that build genre awareness, organizational control, and independence from teacher correction. Participants will leave with adaptable activities, scaffold templates, and revision techniques for a range of EFL proficiency levels.
Bio Prumel Barbudo is an assistant professor and academic writing instructor at the Multilingual Communication Center, Meikai University, Japan. A former Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholar in teacher development, he has 24 years of teaching experience in Japan and the Philippines, spanning early childhood through university education in both public and private institutions. His work focuses on L2 writing pedagogy, particularly process-genre approaches, metacognitive practice, and scaffolded revision. His pedagogical work includes IMPAR3, a recursive framework he developed to make revision a more structured and visible part of L2 writing instruction. His broader research interests include language teacher identity and ethnography in education. Language teachers, researchers, teacher educators, students, and anyone interested in EFL writing, speaking, and learner development are warmly invited to attend.
