Implementing an Oral Proficiency Testing Program at Your School

At the secondary level, foreign language instruction consists mainly of practice activities and taking tests. But there is often a mismatch between how we teach and how (and what) we test: practice is mostly oral and testing is in a written format. The ostensible goal of most foreign language programs is to increase communicative competence; if we are to actually evaluate our students\' progress and level, and oral testing regime would seem to be called for. This talk will focus on an oral proficiency testing program that this teacher has recently implemented. Related topics to be discussed include the exact manner of evaluation, the focus of the testing, and how often to do oral testing.f
