A 2002 Teacher's Eye View of SLA Research: Looking Backward: Looking Forward

The books on research methods in applied linguistics published over the last twenty years are aimed at helping classroom teachers become better consumers of research studies (e.g. Brown, 1988); or at training teachers to set up and conduct research studies (e.g. Freeman, 1998); or at showing how to do research while providing overviews of exemplary studies (e.g. Hatch & Lazaraton, 1991). Unfortunately, none of these books put readers inside the research process as subjects or data analysts or research reporters. What we have tried to do in Doing Second Language Research is to give readers an intimate sense of research processes by involving them in the variety of tasks that all research participants experience. Chapters in Doing Second Language Research deal with case study research, developmental research, introspection research, classroom research, interaction research, descriptive statistics research, survey analysis, correlational research, quasi-experimental research and course evaluation research. The presentation will engage participants in exemplary roles in several of these various research areas.
September 15 is the scheduled press date of Doing Second Language Research by J.D. Brown and T.S. Rodgers, Oxford University Press. This will be the first public presentation based on the new book. Several copies will be raffled off to demonstrate randomization processes in grouping research participants.
