Speaker: (2) Robert Chartrand (Kurume University)

The meeting on October 26th will start with our Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will last about twenty minutes, and then feature a JALT2024 Conference Preview by the JALT2024 Kevin Cleary Invited Speaker, Robert Chartrand. Details below.

Annual General Meeting

First, about the AGM, Darcy De Lint, the Fukuoka Chapter President, writes:

My apologies to anyone who tried to access the previous voting form. It was somehow blocked despite the settings saying otherwise. I am sending the form directly to all chapter members (from fukuokajaltelectionsofficer@gmail.com) in hopes that it will work better that way. If it does not work out then this is the situation.

We have NO contested positions and the Chapter constitution does not require a vote outside of the annual general meeting, scheduled for the 26th. If you wish to be involved in that and have a chance to vote then please join us. The meeting will be held at the Kurume University Satellite Campus site where our regular meetings are held.

The officer roster is as follows:

  • Current President: Darcy de Lint
Willing to continue for the next year
  • Current Program Chair: Trevor Holster
Willing to continue for the next year
  • Current Treasurer: Timothy Pritchard
Willing to continue for the next year
  • Current Publicity Chair: William Pellowe
Willing to continue for the next year

Our presenter, Robert Chartrand, writes:

Title of Presentation: Reflections from a Language Learner and Teacher

This presentation will be a preview of my Kevin Cleary Invited Speech and workshop to be presented at JALT2024. I would like to explore some of the more interesting facets of second language acquisition including the topics of raising children in a bilingual environment, what it means to be a competent language teacher, to be trilingual and how to acquire languages. I would also like to reflect on my career as a language learner, language teacher, an educational technology enthusiast and more recently on my experience as an educational advisor. I am advising a private high school in Tokyo to transition from traditional English teaching methods to a curriculum focused on practical skills, aligned with the CEFR and Cambridge English Qualifications. Challenges included reconciling MEXT requirements with global standards and improving teaching quality. Strategies employed were online reading and vocabulary programs, along with international exchanges to boost literacy, motivation, and cultural understanding. The English education program became more practical and engaging.

Bio: Robert Chartrand is from Montreal, Canada and has been living in Fukuoka since 1983. He is a Professor at the Institute of Foreign Language Education, Kurume University.
