1) Issues Young Learners Face in Grade Schools 2) Use of Japanese Fairytales in English Classes

Sunday, August 25th, 2024, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Nicky Sekino

I am Nicky Sekino: a long-time EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher dedicated to adult education. Until 2022, I had taught English at Japanese and American trade schools and universities. Two years ago, I switched to the education of young learners. It will be a pleasure of mine to exchange opinions with fellow teachers. The first agenda is issues that face elementary school children. They seem to experience some difficulties adjusting to their learning environments, which are inferiority complex accumulated in the early school years. The second agenda is the use of Japanese fairytales in English classes. My ideas are inspired by 1) Ms. Namiko Tsuruta, who discussed the use of English books during the ETJ Tokyo Expo, and 2) Ms. Yuco Kikuchi, who offered a workshop with the same topic in June at the ETJ East Tokyo workshop. I will use Tan Tan No Boshi, a story about a monkey who loves to play with his hat, written by Kazuo Iwamura.
