English as an international language (EIL) and teaching goals

Firstly, I present 'Authentic interaction for young learners' motivation' which is the title of the presentation I give at the JALT International Conference in 2023. In the second part, I will discuss a topic from my Sociolinguistics assignment. I will talk about the idea of English as an international language (EIL) by explaining the concept of World Englishes, which is the plural of English to emphasize the diversity found in the language today. It is argued that EIL is not restricted to link to a single culture or nation. At the same time, EIL belongs to not just native speakers but also any users of English. This shift of subjectivity suggests that EIL functions as an international communication language between many cultures by both L1 and L2 users. EIL requires pragmatic competence and intercultural communicative skills rather than referring to a specific kind of English. This concept is helpful for ESL/EFL learners; however, it is challenging to define teaching goals and approaches.

Presenter: Tomoko Kikuchi I taught English at a public elementary school in Tokyo for four years. Currently, I am pursuing my MA at the University of Leicester in its distance learning TESOL and Applied Linguistics course to develop my teaching skills. This semester, I am tackling one of the most challenging yet intriguing subjects: Sociolinguistics and Discourse Analysis.
