Activating Ideas for Quiet Classes with Young Learners

Sunday, December 4th, 2022, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Nicky Sekino and Yuco Kikuchi

Bio: Nicky Sekino has taught English for 30-plus years. His students had mostly been business people and college students. Right now, he teaches young learners. He has earned a reputation as a "sink-or-swim" teacher. Some students will comply with new challenges in class. Some students are shocked to witness pressure to talk as they learn.

Outline: Nicky will present teaching ideas that he uses in his classes. His workshop will consist of three parts: 1) facial exercise, 2) vocal training, and 3) the 16 Japanese Animal game, which he has created with a hint from Teaching Languages to Young Learners written by Lynne Cameron.

Bio: Yuco Kikuchi teaches elementary school children, junior and high school students and adult learners. She is a lecturer at Keiai University Lifelong Learning Center. Her interests are learner autonomy and CLIL (content and Language Integrated Learning). She puts emphasis on listening skill and uses a lot of listening activities in her classes.

Outline Listen and repeat is an easy way to have children articulate in EFL classrooms. But does it really help them interact with others in real conversation? In this workshop, Yuco will share activities that will help young learners, even reluctant ones, to speak up. Contact Yuco for pre-registration.
