September Meeting: Cross-Cultural Experiences

Friday, September 23rd, 2022, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Nicky Sekino and Namiko Tsuruta

Nicky Sekino Bio: Nicky Sekino is a teacher of English with 30 plus years of teaching experience. He has taught more than 2000 university students and adults. He thinks he is like a "sink-or-swim coach" and teaches English seriously. Outline: The fall online meeting will be about the cross-cultural experiences of Japanese people. One episode is about a Japanese man who has changed his mindset from that of an American to a Japanese. When he returned from the U.S., he would not worry about his reputation. He acted according to how he felt. A few weeks later, he would not do what he did a few weeks ago. He thought he had changed from American to Japanese in a short time. The participants are encouraged to participate in discussions.

Namiko Tsuruta is currently Program Director of Global Language Institute and Creative Director of The Tokyo Life. Having spent her primary, secondary and tertiary years in the States, Namiko often shares her unique narrative in the EFL classroom to help her learners explore topics like identity, diversity and multiculturalism. Outline: English allows our learners here an alternate or extra voice to express their genuine thoughts and ideas, and build more authentic and deeper connections with others all over the world. By sharing her own long journey as an ESL learner, a returnee and a bilingual educator who actively promotes English in Japanese education, she hopes to continue to inspire her learners to use their L2 to empower themselves.
