ETJ East Tokyo May Online Workshop

Speaker: Namiko Tsuruta, Nicky Sekino

Speaker 1: Nicky Sekino
Title: Two Ideas for Active Class Atmosphere
Topic 1: The Magic Clay
One of the lessons for voice-acting training is The Magic Clay. Intriguing as the title sounds, it will stimulate one's imagination and perhaps make people less shy. So, why not use it in young learners' English classes? Knead clay that does not exist, and form an object that does not exist. Please give the product to the person who sits next to you. Let us see if The Magic Clay works in your language class.

Topic 2: Mother Talks to Her Son
Young learners will enjoy practicing tonal variations. Different tones will convey different feelings. Let us prepare for such a lesson. Let me present a dialogue between a mother and her son. She faces a difficult time with her 10-year old son. He is either happy or unhappy, and the line between the two is not clear. They are now having breakfast. Well, she is. Not he is.

Nicky Sekino is an experienced EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher. He has taught more than 2000 people of all ages, from pre-school children to senior citizens. He now takes a voice acting course to see if the experience will apply to language teaching.

Speaker 2: Namiko Tsuruta
Title: Rethinking Literacy in English Education (Part 2): How to Help Our Learners "Catch the Reading Bug"
Abstract: English has become a compulsory subject in the 5th and 6th grades, and as a result, MEXT-approved textbooks from junior high schools have now trickled down to upper elementary schools. But are the textbooks enough? What supplementary and authentic reading materials can we also provide our learners to balance out relevant and meaningful content with what is compulsory? Back in February, we examined the most important developmental and literacy skills our learners in primary school should possess in their L1 and L2. We also looked quantitatively at the alarming discrepancy between what our learners' textbooks cover and the vocabulary in high frequency lists, which are necessary for developing literacy and fluency in L2. In this session, we will continue to explore reading through various mediums. Many examples of authentic reading materials (with listening, speaking and writing support) will be shown at different levels to demonstrate how our learners' interests can be sparked and guided. In addition, scaffolding will also be covered to aid our learners' comprehension, and ensure engagement with the text. If you are a primary school, junior high or senior high teacher struggling to make reading fun and relevant for your learners, please join us and be ready to share your thoughts and concerns.

Bio: Namiko Tsuruta has taught English to learners in preschool, K-12 and in various industries since 1999.
