This presentation explores learner agency and motivation through project-based teaching. The two presenters will discuss their respective experiences of project-based teaching, and how and whether this type of teaching promotes learner agency and motivation.
The first presenter, Mari Nakamura, will describe one of the creative projects that she implements in her language school's teenager classes. The teaching objective is to stimulate learners' intrinsic motivation, to build confidence in expressing their ideas and to co-construct knowledge through discussions.
Then the second presenter, Keiko Sakui, will describe project-based practices used on a university teacher-training course. In one of the projects, teacher-to-be students exchanged English letters and self-made videos with elementary school students in Okinawa. Keiko will describe her objectives for the course, her perceptions of the impact on students' sense of agency, and students' perceptions of the project. The presentation will have ample time for open discussion about project-based learning and its impact on learners' motivation and agency. The audience are welcome to share their thoughts and experiences on the topic.
