Speaker 1: Nicky Sekino
Title: The History of Loan Words in Japan
Abstract: In old Japan, people talked to each other but did not write to each other. In other words, the Japanese language was for speaking only. Researchers may argue, but it was in the 3rd century when the country adopted a written form: the Chinese language. Japanese became a complete language with a speaking form and a writing form. The Japanese people did two things. They added Japanese sounds to Chinese characters. They also decoded Chinese writing so they could read Chinese documents without knowledge of the Chinese language. This development, in my assessment, has become the foundation for the Japanese to learn a second language: a focus on reading with little emphasis on speaking.

Bio: Nicky Sekino is an experienced EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instructor. He has taught English at vocational schools, universities, and corporate classes. His focus is English for Business Purposes. He currently teaches at Tokyo School for Music and Dance.

Speaker 2: Namiko Tsuruta
Title: Exploring Identity and Cross-Cultural Topics through CLIL
Abstract: There is a strong disconnect between how English is traditionally taught in Japan and its prevalence as an international language in our interconnected digital world. Moreover, many young adults are not confident and feel somewhat detached from their roles in Japanese society. Are our traditional approaches to foreign language instruction sufficient in preparing our learners to become active and global participants of the present "Experience Age"?

In this workshop, the facilitator hopes to inspire EFL and EIL/ELF practitioners to implement meaningful, CLIL-based activities to help our young learners use language as a powerful medium for self-expression and self-empowerment.

Bio: Namiko Tsuruta has 23 years of teaching experience in various schools and business settings. She has been a bilingual trainer for preschool, primary and secondary schools in Japan for over 17 years. She is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall and the University of Michigan. She is currently Program Director of Global Language Institute and Creative Director of the The Tokyo Life.
