Bilingualism and Bunko

The presentation will be on bunko, and their effectiveness as a site for bilingual development. Bunko are bilingual groups whose members are returnees, expatriate children and the offspring of international marriages. The core of a bunko is its book collection, and its members meet regularly to share books and enjoy linguistic activities in an informal setting; the aim being to help children keep up their other language. Frances will describe its successes and failures in maintaining its members' English language skills. Then the potential of bunko to contribute to bilingual development will be examined. This also entails thinking about early bilingual education and lifelong education (the bunko facilitators are volunteer adults and/or parents).
