Language teachers are often concerned with student motivation. This presentation will argue that motivation may not be directly accessible to pedagogy, and that teachers should focus on creating engagement in the classroom to promote both learning and long-term motivation. We will examine the difference between motivation and engagement to understand why engagement should be at the center of teaching practice. From Flow Theory (Csikszentmihalyi, 1994), this workshop suggests three features that teachers should consider in designing activities to promote greater student engagement: clear goals; balance of challenge and skill; and immediate feedback. Participants will then complete a number of activities and judge how well they meet the design feature requirements suggested. Time will be available for further discussion of designing for engagement.
