CLIL Approaches to Post-truth Pedagogy

Saturday, October 20th, 2018, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Sandra Kouritzin

Today's iGeneration youth, those who do not distinguish cyberspace from "real" space in the same way that earlier generations have, are exposed to constantly-aggregating fake news, alternative facts, and other forms of post-truth posturing. Because social media platforms have algorithms feeding them only what they are predisposed to like, they are seldom called upon to challenge their own opinions. The goal of language teachers in this new paradigm must be to help ELLs recognize and combat post-truth posturing. I will report on my own attempts to work with these ideas in an EFL context that began by discussing the concept of post-truth with students, establishing an understanding of how the English language is changing daily, for example, by replacing concrete words about truthfulness and deceit with words like "exaggeration", "misspeak", "parallel truth" or "spin" along with the neologisms like "alternative facts" and "fake news." I will then discuss the question: How can we prepare ESL students to compare mainstream and alternative media in terms of how news is framed and how it positions readers to (dis)engage with it?
