Some universities coordinate their English education curriculum among all the classes so students essentially acquire the same knowledge and skills and are tested in the same way, regardless of which instructor they get. Meanwhile, other institutes let each teacher decide what to teach in their own class and how to evaluate the students. Based on the experience working at a university that has gradually transformed into a coordinated English program among the General Education classes, both before and after the transformation, this presentation explores the major benefits and drawbacks that come with each system. Participants are highly encouraged to share their experience as well. While this presentation focuses on universities, many elements from this presentation can also be applied to other levels of public and private English institutes.
Presenter: Jackson Lee is a Specially-appointed Lecturer at Gifu University. He has been teaching in Japan for 7 years. His research interests include intercultural communication, teacher education and the Japanese English education system. Jackson is also the Publicity Chair of Gifu JALT.
