Building Friendly Classroom Communities and Vocabulary Acquisition

Sunday, July 8th, 2018, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Sandra Wigmore, Florence Valderama Ito and Doris Wong

ETJ Tokyo is holding its 3rd meeting of the year. Three presenters will share their wealth of knowledge on building friendly classrooms as well as vocabulary acquisition for young learners. In Doris' workshop she will be discussing vocabulary acquisition techniques for young learners, as well as some quick tips and tricks that have proven effective with the 200 students she teaches each year. Florence and Sandra will present on helping teachers to explore the role of creativity in the classroom, both in the sense of helping students to express their unique creative identity, and also by helping them to think about and use language creatively, through a series of specially designed classroom activities using manipulatives. The activities presented will be suitable for a broad range of students, from lower to higher levels, and can be used alongside your existing course materials.

Florence Valderama Ito has been teaching in Japan since 2006, most recently at Saitama Board of Education teaching Global Studies in JHS. Sandra Wigmore was an elementary school teacher in Canada before coming to Japan. She has been teaching in Japan since 2008. Her first year was at an international school in Yokohama followed by an English language school teaching a range of students between 3 and 83 years old. Doris is the owner of KEYS English in Tokyo, as well as a trainer for eikaiwa teachers, ALTs and Japanese homeroom teachers.
