Graded Readers and Global Issues: A Hard Sell?

Saturday, June 23rd, 2018, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Speaker: Catriona Takeuchi (THT SIG), Ann Mayeda (Konan Women's University)

PLEASE NOTE: This presentation starts at 18:00, one hour earlier than Gifu JALT's usual time

In any extensive reading program, allowing learners some choice and selection in reading materials is an important aspect. Yet how many of our learners would willingly choose non-fiction or global issues-themed readers on their own? In our experience, learners tend to shy away from the 'heavy stuff' as the content might be perceived as dry or the vocabulary too unfamiliar.

Using an exciting new series of multi-perspective graded readers, Catriona Takeuchi and Ann Mayeda will discuss the genesis and benefits of the series; and in an interactive workshop will look at interesting and novel ways of using them in the language classroom designed to spark interest in the topics…and wanting to read more!

Catriona Takeuchi (THT SIG co-coordinator, freelance writer/editor) and Ann Mayeda (Konan Women's University) have been involved in teacher-training workshops and implementing extensive reading programs in Nepal for the past several years. They are editors in the above graded readers series set for release soon by ABAX Japan.
