Phonics: New School Year, New Ideas: Yochien Through High School

ETJ Tokyo is holding its 2nd meeting of the year. Three presenters will share their classroom successes when it comes to phonics. If you're looking for practical examples and ideas when it comes to teaching phonics; then this workshop is for you!

As we know, phonics is the building blocks for setting students up with the skills they can use for a lifetime of decoding and pronunciation. A new school year with fresh ideas can give any teacher a boost. ETJ Tokyo workshops are designed with short presentations that allow for time for all attendees to share ideas. Andy Baysa has been teaching English for 6 years ranging from high school to kindergarten. Currently she leads the foreign teachers' department at an international school in Chiba. Her presentation will focus on teaching phonics to very young learners and classroom transitional activities that are enjoyable and help keep young learner's attention.

Katie Sudo has taught English as a content area for over 12 years both in the US and in Japan. She has a wide range of teaching experience for both adults and children as well as public and private schools. In her presentation she will highlight meaning focused activities of early literacy. Helping students take their reading to the next level. She will share some of her favorite children's books and explain how to best choose a book for your ESL/EFL students. She will also share ideas on how to examine and reflect upon children's literacy programs and their value.

Ellie Kumagai has been teaching for 11 years in both schools and privately. She has been working at a small school teaching rhythmic English for 8 years. Her presentation will focus on phonic activities for elementary school children. Ellie's teaching style is game based with phonics snuck in and disguised as fun. She will share some card games and other fun activities she uses with her students to hold their interest.
