The Mechanism of Japanese Communication: Grin and Bear It (ETJ Chiba May Workshop)

An academic question is if the Japanese and Westerners smile for different occasions. A casual observer of cross-cultural differences will say "yes" to this question. However, neurologists may say "no" to the question. A quick study in neurology indicates that the brain uses two different parts to trigger genuine and non-genuine smiles. Without touching on technicalities, all peoples of the world may smile and fake a smile for the same occasions. So, the question is not "if" but "why." The workshop, however, will touch less on neurology but discuss how the Japanese and a Westerner differ in the use of facial expressions.

About the presenter: The presenter is Nicky Sekino. Because of his English first name and Japanese last name, some people wonder about his nationality. He is a Japanese man who teaches English. Nicky is a professional name he uses when he teaches English. He started teaching in the 1980's at trade schools and universities from Japan and the United States. Three decades later today, he is now involved in the education of business people. He does not lecture but offers a workshop. His students will learn the English language as they fulfill given tasks. He has his MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Teachers College Columbia University.
