From A Pageful Of Text To A Mouthful Of Air: Materials Design For Teaching The Spoken Language

This presentation highlights the centrality of speaking in language use; especially the genre of speaking referred to as conversation. The presenter suggests that teaching conversation should be a prominent feature of any language course and that in order to teach conversation, teachers must have an awareness of the language specifics that apply to conversation and how to teach them. The presenter will outline language points that characterize conversation such as discourse markers, general extenders, backchannels, upgrade adjectives and so on and show samples of classroom materials that can be used to support teaching these points. The presenter will illustrate the teaching methodology and results with video of classroom interactions.
Creating Supplemental Handouts That Increase Opportunities For Spoken Interaction

Despite publisher claims that course books, especially four-skills course books, provide everything a teacher requires, no course book can actually satisfy all student and teacher needs. In Japan many teachers feel their students need extra speaking practice but struggle make their own materials that fit together with their textbook. This presentation will introduce a systematic approach developed by the presenter over the last several years called ACoPE (Analyze, Consult, Produce and Evaluate) to help teachers create supplemental materials. Additionally, the presenter will demonstrate ways that textbook activities can be made more naturalistic to give students better, more realistic speaking opportunities.
