Sunday, March 18th, 2018, 10:00 AM - 11:55 AM
Speaker: Nicky Sekino; Yuco Kikuchi
Theme: Conclusion First or Background First?
Speaker 1: Nicky Sekino
There are some fundamental differences in the speaking logic of English and Japanese. In Japanese, people explain the background first and conclude later. In English, people conclude first and explain the background later. Because of this difference, people often do not understand each other well even if they are speaking in English.
Speaker Sekino will introduce some cases of failed communication. The first one is an academic symposium where a guide has not answered his questions. The second one is a subway official who has done his best to answer his questions but ended up antagonizing him.
This is a workshop, not a lecture. The participants will share the stories and understand why miscommunication can occur between English speakers and Japanese people.
Theme: CLIL in Young Learners Classroom
Speaker 2: Yuco Kikuchi
This pragmatic workshop will see CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in young learners' classrooms. The presenter will share teacher-friendly and fun math activities. Learning numbers is very important in acquiring sounds of English such as /v/, /th/ and /ir/. Numbers include these prononciations as. It is also beneficial for children to practice and use numbers in meaningful activities. Participants will be asked to join the activities and share ideas on how to adapt them in their own classes.
