Non-Competitive Games

Saturday, October 14th, 2017, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Speaker: ETJ Fukuoka Committee

We'll examine the differences and similarities between competitive and noncompetitive (cooperative) games in the EFL classroom. Alfie Kohn describes competition as "mutually exclusive goal attainment" where one person can succeed only if others fail. He goes further to say that "children succeed in spite of competition, not because of it."

Let's think about how our games are structured around competition or cooperation and the effects that can have on our students. Topics for thought and discussion (feel free to bring your own, too!):

  • What are noncompetitive (or cooperative) games?
  • Are cooperative games as fun as competitive games?
  • Are there disadvantages to competitive games? How about noncompetitive games?
  • Is it possible to turn a competitive game into a cooperative one?
  • Are cooperative or competitive games more effective for our teaching aims?
  • Cooperative classrooms vs competitive society
  • Bring your best cooperative game ideas.
