How does globalism affect Japanese English education, and should it?

With a top-down agenda of "globalism" coming from MEXT and the many new "International Studies Departments" opening throughout Japan, including here at Kindai University, it is important to understand the impact of the push toward internationalization on the English education system in Japan. This symposium seeks to address the divergent viewpoints on this thought-provoking issue by asking of not only the panelists, but also the audience:

1. What does "globalism" mean to you as an educator, and how is it different from "国際化"?

2. Is globalism for everyone? (i.e. is the MEXT agenda realistic considering Japan's homogeneic society?)

3. Should globalism be a general goal of English programs in Japan? To what degree?

4. What issues and challenges do teachers and students in Japan have (e.g. socio-cultural needs and wants, values, norms, communication styles), and how can these be dealt with?
