Focus on Form in Classroom Second Language Acquisition

This presentation will address a number issues concerning attention to form in second language teaching. What is focus on form? Much misunderstood in the literature, "focus on form" will be defined and contrasted to approaches to language teaching that emphasize only meaning or only structures. How can focus on form be implemented in lessons and curricula? Our main concern here will be a detailed consideration of whether, when, and how to draw learners' attention to form, as well as which areas of language may be amenable. Does focus on form work? Finally, the evidence for the effectiveness of instruction that employs focus on form will be examined. Catherine Doughty is Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics, Department of Second Language Studies, University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
