HomeMotivation and Alienation: Resistance as a Natural Part of Language Learning

Learners who struggle with a foreign language often suffer from feelings of alienation and failure, and may be seen as lazy or unmotivated. This presentation will argue, however, that negative reactions to language learning are, in effect, a normal part of the learning process. It will present evidence that psychological resistance is a natural result of attempting to change patterns of unconscious cognition. It will also argue that current models of motivation in SLA don’t fully take this into account. It will help teachers look at motivation in a new light, and will provide tips for reducing learner resistance. It will touch equally on theory, research and classroom practice.
