JALT Four Corners Tour

JALT's West Tokyo Chapter, Macmillan Education Japan, BTB Press, and Toyo Gakuen University are pleased to host presentations by Andy Boon (author of Research & Write) and Dorothy Zemach (2016 JALT plenary speaker). This is a great opportunity for all ELT professionals who seek to expand their knowledge and gain useful insights into classroom teaching. All are welcome!

Presentations will be held from 18:00 pm to 20:00 pm. Following the presentations, there will be curry party in a nearby restaurant from 20:15 pm to 22:15 pm. Dinner plus free drinks will cost 1,800 yen per person. The usual price is 2,800 yen, but Macmillan has kindly offered to pay 1,000 per person. As seats are limited, please reserve by emailing Andy Boon if you wish to attend the curry party.

• 18:00-18:45 Getting Students Researching and Writing

  Having students do research projects can be a powerful means of empowering students to take their learning beyond the borders of the classroom, to determine interesting puzzles or problems, to seek answers, and suggest change. This presentation will examine the process of engaging students in semester-long projects from equipping them with the necessary research tools to having them deliver the end-product via various media in the final class. It will also describe students? reactions to the overall learning experience.
  
  Andy Boon is an associate professor in the faculty of Global Communication at Toyo Gakuen University. He has been teaching in Japan for over 18 years and holds a PhD from Aston University. He has been an active member of the Japan Association for Language Teaching since 2004, has presented at numerous conferences, and has published articles on teacher development, motivation, and methodology. Books written for Macmillan include Research & Write, Homestay in the UK, Culture Shock in Japan, This is Facebook, Campfire Ghost Stories, and Conspiracy Theories.

• 18:55-19:55 Teaching Intensive Reading Skills

  Teaching reading, especially in an academic context, can be challenging because students confuse ?reading? with ?literacy,? and assume that once they can decode words?and know enough vocabulary?they?ll be proficient readers. However, there are definite skills and strategies that successful readers use to read faster, understand better, and remember more easily. This session will focus on intensive reading skills for all stages of reading (pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading) that can be taught and practiced to help students engage academic texts more successfully.
  
  Dorothy Zemach has taught ESL for over 18 years, in Asia, Africa, and the US. She holds an MA in TESL from the School for International Training in Vermont, USA. She currently concentrates on writing, editing, and publishing ELT materials and textbooks and conducting teacher training workshops. A frequent plenary speaker at international conferences, her areas of specialty and interest are teaching writing, teaching reading, business English, academic English, curriculum design, testing, and humor. Books written for Macmillan include Writing Sentences, Writing Paragraphs, Writing Essays, and Writing Research Papers; Get Ready for International Business 1 and2; OpenMind Essentials and MasterMind level 2. Additionally, she is the series consultant on the five-level, ELTon nominated series Skillful.
