In a language classroom, tasks are often developed that are little more than drills, having students repeat the same phrase multiple times while only replacing one or two key vocabulary words and drilling only for the sake of drilling. In the field of Second Language Acquisition, a task is an activity that structures interaction among participants and uses language for an outcome that is both concrete and focuses on the exchange of meaning. Participants in this workshop will learn about and develop different types of tasks that, unlike common drills, have a communicative purpose driving them.
