The Evolution of Business Language Training in Japan (day 2 of 2)

Sunday, June 26th, 2016, 10:00 AM - 3:15 PM

Speaker: Michael Handford, Andrew Vaughan and Hiromasa Tanaka, plus 13 more

Dates: Saturday, June 25, 2-5pm; Sunday, June 26, 10am-3:15pm

The aim of this event is to throw light on the various ways that Business English is being learned, taught and used in workplaces in Japan. So we want to draw together corporate, academic and private business English teachers and researchers to discuss current teaching practices and the evolution of this field.

Professor Mike Handford (Cardiff University, author of Business Advantage) takes a critical approach to notions of national culture and stereotypes in his video talk "Problem-solving at work: Understanding discourse and culture in the international construction industry". Andrew Vaughan (Linguage Intercom, Sumikin Intercom, author of Ready for Business) brings twenty five years of experience managing a communications training company in Japan and delivering needs-based training to a talk titled "Unmet needs: Preparing professionals for the global workplace". Professor Hiromasa Tanaka (Meisei University) adopts the perspective of a Japanese corporate learner and uses authentic business-context data to illustrate the notion of a strategic approach to Business English he terms "A management approach to language". Other presentation topics include English for scientists, the discourse of working women, Japanese-Chinese intercultural communication gaps, insider views on Englishnization, Business English testing, and more.
