As language teachers in the 21st century, we live in challenging times. What is our responsibility as educators in a world of war, poverty, prejudice and pollution? How can we teach English in a way that promotes global awareness, international understanding and social responsibility? How can we improve students' language proficiency while empowering them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in a global age? This presentation will introduce the field of global education, outline its aims and objectives, and discuss key steps that teachers can take to add a global dimension to the language classroom. Participants will experience a variety of content-based activities designed on global issue themes and discuss how these can be adapted to their classrooms. What Japan – and every country - needs is young people with language skills and international experience who can take action as global citizens to help solve the problems facing our multicultural world. This session will argue that language educators have a special role to play in this important task.
Biographical Information:
Kip A. Cates is a professor in the Faculty of Regional Sciences at Tottori University where he teaches courses on global studies, international exchange and cross-cultural understanding. He has a B.A. in Modern Languages (French, German, Japanese) from the University of British Columbia, Canada and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading, England. He is active in the field of global education and language teaching as a speaker, writer and teacher trainer. He is the chair of JALT's Global Issues SIG and editor of its quarterly "Global Issues in Language Education" newsletter. He is also the founder of the Asian Youth Forum (AYF) and writes monthly essays for the Japan Times Shukan ST newspaper. He has worked, lived or traveled in 50 countries and speaks 9 languages.
