Public Directives in Japanese and American English: Implications for L2 Learners

Sunday, May 12th, 2002, 2:15 PM - 4:20 PM

Speaker: Carol Rinnert

This presentation is based on pragmatic analysis of more than 700 public directives (e.g., prohibitions, requests, warnings) in diverse contexts, ranging from airports to zoos, in Japan and the U.S. Implications of the findings include the need to raise awareness of the systematic variation in both societies in order to avoid potentially serious misunderstandings of the intended meaning of the directives.
