The Tipping Point of EFL/ESL

Saturday, September 19th, 2015, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Speaker: ETJ Fukuoka Committee

As social scientist Malcolm Gladwell tells us, "A tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips and spreads like wildfire." The EFL/ESL industry is precariously balanced for change. ESL is poised for "more students, taking more exams and using more technology." Let’s look at Gladwell's ideas and our future with factors such as new consumer practice, evolving technological capabilities and increasing economic incentives. Are we truly at a tipping point in ESL? And if so how do we change to ensure effective response to our customers in our classrooms, online and in our industry as a whole? Topics for thought and discussion (feel free to bring your own, too!):

  • How do we initiate technological change in our ESL approaches in the classroom?
  • What practical steps can we take as teachers to engage a tipping point mentality in ESL? (How our students learn, where they learn and who guides their path?)
  • Share ideas and examples you have for creative change in games, activities, and lessons for students.

After Party: Enjoy drinks and dinner in Nishijin after the meeting! It will be a great chance to focus on teaching, exchange ideas, and network with other teachers in the Fukuoka community.
