ETJ Chiba July Online Workshop Teaching Reading in English Sight-Reading vs. Progressive Phonetic Construction

Sunday, July 26th, 2015, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Erik Kaye and others

This workshop hopefully clarifies the difference between Japanese and Western methodologies for teaching English reading skills to Japanese students, child and adult, with the goal of cooperation and harmony.

  • A demonstration of Sight Reading and Progressive Phonetic Construction drilling exercises
By participating in contrasting drilling exercises, workshop guests can discuss the advantages and implications of each method of instruction.
  • Introduction to the Japanized English (Eigokana) Katakana chart
Romanized Japanese (Romaji) is a system developed by the first Protestant missionaries in Yokohama to effectively teach themselves to pronounce Japanese accurately by using Roman (Latin) letters. What would a corresponding system look like that promotes the accurate pronunciation of English sounds by using an expanded Katakana chart? By examining a proposed Japanized English Katakana chart, we can better articulate the challenges to teaching Progressive Phonetic Construction to Japanese students.

Erik Kaye is a Teacher, Artist, Writer. He teaches Business and Medical English for JFE Steel, Nobel BioCare and Chiba University Hospital in Chiba.
