Study Skills Strategies for First Year College

Saturday, September 21st, 2002, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Speaker: Tim Allan, Kwassui Women's College, Nagasaki

A double difficulty for young college students can be learning how to deal with general academic requirements, while simultaneously learning how to meet specific classroom behavioural and cultural expectations of foreign teachers. In this demonstration, we will outline a Study Skills course begun in the spring of 2000 at a private women\'s university in Nagasaki. The curriculum is based on six overarching strategies we identified as common needs, regardless of student backgrounds: goal setting, motivation, resources, how to improve general language skills, time management, and cultural issues. All of these are integrated with language skills in an evolving course.
