Applying the Uniqueness Principle in Language Classrooms: Tools & Tasks

Research shows that learners often misunderstand or resist multiple functions for single forms (such as present and future meanings of the present continuous). This is called the Uniqueness Principle (UP). The presenter will explain UP with examples from research and classroom data, arguing that understanding UP benefits teachers in several ways. He will then demonstrate awareness-raising activities (embedded within larger tasks) which reveal different functions or meanings created by single forms, thus confirming or contradicting students' initial understandings.
