Many people think that raising a child in two or more languages is a natural process. However, there are many challenges and considerations. What are the factors that enable a child to become bilingual? Is biliteracy important? This talk explores the challenges and benefits of raising a bilingual (or multilingual child) in Japan. Education options and ideas for supporting children’s language skills are also addressed. This talk will be of particular interest to parents with young children and couples thinking about having children.
Mary Nobuoka is the coordinator of JALT Bilingualism SIG. She is a lecturer at Gakushuin University, Sophia University and Ochanomizu University. She is currently raising her bicultural, bilingual, 11-year-old son in Yokohama.
