Improving reading fluency through extensive reading and speed reading: Problems and applications

For Kyoto JALT s first event of 2014, our presenters will discuss how to approach improving student reading fluency through extensive reading (ER) and speed reading. While both approaches have been widely lauded in Japan and approach, their application is not always unproblematic. All three presenters will discuss varying research-based applications of these approaches to reading pedagogy with the aim of improving existing techniques, and encouraging fellow teachers to implement and experiment more broadly.

Our first presenter, Ann Flanagan, will talk about how she has brought ER into the secondary school classroom, as well as the obstacles this innovation has faced, how they are being overcome, and how ER might be brought into primary and secondary schools throughout Japan.

The next presenter, Amanda Gillis-Furutaka, will share her mixed qualitative-quantitative research on why, despite the stated goal of ER to encourage learners to read easy L2 without dictionary usage, many in Japan nevertheless rely upon L1 dictionary use in ER programs.

Our final presenter, Bjorn Fuisting, will discuss the benefits, based upon two years research, of implementing a speed reading program for tertiary EFL classes.

All presentations will include time for comments and questions from the audience.
