Writing Poetry for Children and Teens: A Workshop

Speaker: Leza Lowitz, Mariko Nagai and Holly Thompson

Join us for a workshop on writing poems for children and teens focusing on three intriguing categories: Quest Poems, History Poems and Action Poems. Three poets--Leza Lowitz, Mariko Nagai and Holly Thompson--will present and comment on works by other poets and share samples of their own efforts in these categories. Inspiration will hopefully follow, and there will be intervals for participants to jot ideas in each category and begin creating poems. There will be plenty of time for discussion and Q&A. About the speakers:

Leza Lowitz (lezalowitz.com) has published 17 books, including the YA novel Jet Black and the Ninja Wind (with Shogo Oketani). Her work has appeared in The New York Times online, The Huffington Post, Shambhala Sun and Best Buddhist Writing. She has received the PEN Josephine Miles Poetry Award, PEN Syndicated Fiction Award, NEA and NEH grants, and Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Award.

Mariko Nagai (mariko-nagai.com) is the author of a MG verse novel, Dust of Eden, and three books for adults. She graduated from NYU's Creative Writing Program with a concentration in poetry, and has won many awards for her writing. She is Assistant Regional Advisor for SCBWI Japan and teaches Japanese literature and Creative Writing at Temple University Japan Campus.

Holly Thompson (hatbooks.com) is the author of two YA novels in verse, The Language Inside and Orchards, the picture book The Wakame Gatherers, and editor of Tomo: Friendship Through Fiction. A graduate of the NYU Creative Writing Program, she writes poetry and fiction for children, teens and adults, serves as Regional Advisor for SCBWI Japan, and teaches at Yokohama City University.
