Commercial textbooks form the backbone of many language courses. While such textbooks offer many advantages, they are rarely perfectly suited to any one particular group of learners. This leads many teachers to develop their own materials, as well as methodologies which they find 'work' for them and their students. This workshop will look at both material design and successful methodologies. Two broad areas of material design will be covered: supplementary materials and whole-course design. Supplementary materials can help the teacher adapt a textbook to the needs of a group of learners; this is particularly useful when a textbook is specified by an institution. Whole-course creation requires more work and research into syllabus design, but can ultimately lead to very successful courses.
Motivating methodologies are another important consideration for language courses. The workshop will look at ways to integrate motivating methodologies into material design, and also suggest a range of stand-alone activities which teachers can use in any class. Drawing on his experience at Tokai University with the design of two content-based courses in Global Issues for undergraduates, and a technical English course for the Graduate School of Engineering, as well a complete range of supplementary materials for two commercially-produced textbooks, the presenter will discuss a range of considerations for successful language teaching.
