Using Games Effectively

Saturday, September 29th, 2012, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Speaker: ETJ Fukuoka Committee

Discussion/Workshop: It's not the just the game, it's how it's played.

New theories suggest that humans learn best as a result of well-designed experiences. Games can be immersive, experiential learning environments, and they are fast becoming central to the modern approach of getting students to actively discover new information and practice skills, as well as develop attitudes and learn different ways of thinking. Nonetheless, games are still in an early stage of evolution. How can we use games most effectively? Questions for thought and discussion:

  • What do students feel about games?
  • Thinking about the purpose of games
  • What skills and language can games develop?
  • Many games vs. few
  • The games vs. "sports" approach
  • Integration with the curriculum and lesson targets
  • Practicalities: Simpler, cheaper games with greater impact
  • Social aspects and collaboration
  • Harmonizing effectiveness and educational value
  • Sharing your favorite games

After Party:

Enjoy drinks and dinner in Nishijin after the meeting! It will be a great chance to focus on teaching, exchange ideas, and network with other teachers in the Fukuoka community.
