48th RELC International Seminar: Assessment in Language Education (day 2 of 3)

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013, 8:30 AM - 5:45 PM

Speaker: Constant Leung, Stewart Webb, John Field, Ng Seok Moi, Claudia Harsch, Yoshinori Watanabe, plus many more

The topic of the 48th RELC International Seminar is "Assessment in Language Education: Innovations, Issues & Insights." Assessment is currently one of the key buzzwords among language researchers and education practitioners, and we have now begun to look into diverse assessment instruments which can better track teaching and learning progress. No longer are we content with a single mode of assessment such as the familiar forms of psychometric measurement of learners' performance. Instead, our aim is to empower learners by recognising that learner-centred assessment procedures can cultivate independent learning skills that extend beyond examination-smart techniques. As policy makers in the region begin to endorse these innovations as well, what do such developments mean for teachers and learners? How can education practitioners and learners make sense of the distinction between assessing for learning and assessing of learning? How should we assess multimodal literacies? Can we design and develop alternative language assessments which are reliable, valid and practical?

This seminar will provide a platform for language testers, educators and policy makers to share their insights, best practices and challenges in assessing language learners' progress. For full details, please see the conference web page.
