Cooperative/collaborative learning within the framework of self-determination theory: Theories and their applications in Japanese EFL classrooms
Toshie Agawa
The purposes of this presentation are to 1) show how cooperative/ collaborative learning (CL) fit into the framework of self-determination theory (SDT), 2) display how CL can be implemented in a Japanese EFL classroom, and 3) demonstrate how CL activities can be conducted in an EFL class. At the beginning of the presentation, the speaker will briefly define what CL is. Then she will explain, by showing the theoretical affinity of SDT and CL, how one can speculate that CL may enhance learner motivation. After that, she will demonstrate how CL can be weaved into a syllabus for an EFL course in a Japanese university. An actual syllabus and its activities will be introduced. Participants will have an opportunity to experience some of these activities.

Toshie Agawa is an assistant professor at Keisen University in Tokyo. She is interested in learner motivation, demotivation and cooperative/collaborative learning. Her other interests include learner autonomy and communication strategies.
