Promoting young learners' reading skills is one of the biggest challenges among EFL teachers of young learners. Will there be any ways to accelerate their literacy development when we see them only once a week? What does current research in brain science inform us about effective approaches in literacy education? In this practical session, the presenter will demonstrate some fun, dynamic and brain-friendly literacy activities using illustrated stories and graded readers. She will also introduce a very unique independent reading program for G4-6 students at her own school which aims to promote various reading and study skills while preparing them for extensive reading in their teenage years.
Mari Nakamura, co-author of English Land (Pearson Longman) and Doraemon Hajimeteno Eigojiten (an English dictionary for children: Shogakkan), has been giving numerous teacher training sessions all around Japan while teaching young learners and teenagers at her own school, English Square (www.crossroad.jp/es/), in Kanazawa City. She has earned the MSc in TEYL program at Aston University, and is a columnist for JALT TC-SIG TLC Newsletter. She also volunteers as the Coordinator of ETJ Ishikawa.
