Crosswords are extremely simple to create, can provide multiple contexts for students learning new vocabulary and are highly enjoyable. Despite all this, however, they are mostly underutilized in the classroom, or relegated to busywork status. This presentation will explore the numerous ways crosswords can be utilized in the language classroom as effective language building tools. Practical examples of activities will be given which demonstrate how crosswords can address real language needs for students.

Textbooks play a big part in English education in Japan because many teachers rely on them heavily, teaching every part of every unit and rarely introducing supplementary materials. Unfortunately, few non-Japanese teachers at the university level are familiar with the style in which their students have been taught in the past, and this can lead to inefficiencies and misunderstandings. At the beginning of the presentation, the presenter will describe the layout, contents, and methodology of typical English textbooks. Participants will then discuss ideas for how they could be improved. Are these English textbooks really suitable for successful language learning? If something is missing, then how and what do we need to change?
