Quantitative Research 101: An extended seminar/workshop

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Carol Rinnert and Ian Willey

This one-day workshop is intended for novice and less experienced researchers who wish to gain a better understanding of (1) how to interpret research results presented in the applied linguistics literature, and (2) how to conduct their own research. Four 90-minute sessions are planned. Sessions 1 to 3 are designed for novice and less experienced researchers; experienced researchers are encouraged to join Session 4.

Session 1: Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research
Basic overview of research design and methodology; relating our own research to the field (finding a niche); introduction to helpful reference books; practical advice on getting started, and a guide to designing and analyzing questionnaire data.

Session 2: Statistical Tests
The 5 most commonly used statistical tests in applied linguistics: When and why are they used? How are they run? What does the outcome look like? What do they tell us?

  • Chi-square (or McNemar's, if the cells are not independent).
  • Correlations (including reliability measures).
  • t-test (paired and independent).
  • ANOVA (with post-hoc tests of effects and/or pairwise comparisons, such as Scheffe)
  • Factor analysis

Session 3: Hands-on Demonstration
Practical, step-by-step walk-through of procedures for handling quantitative data, how to get data into SPSS, choosing the most appropriate statistical tests, controlling variables, and interpreting the results (using sample studies).

Session 4: Open Workshop
Participants introduce their own research interests/experiences; get and give advice about the most appropriate methodologies; warn of pitfalls to avoid; share hints for success.
