Using Storyboarding in the EFL Classroom

Storyboarding is a technique used to drive the development of a narrative using pictures and, in some cases, dialogue. In the language classroom it can be adapted as a tool for students to quickly plot stories and then add their own dialogue, thereby being the producers of English at their own level - whatever that may be. It can also be used to focus listening skills, encourage creativity, develop team building, target specific grammar patterns and speedily share content as a basis for discussion. During the workshop we will do a short storyboard activity, look at some examples of what students have done and also some materials that may have a place in your teaching "bag of tricks". Storyboarding is a versatile tool in the language classroom that can help your students communicate authentically and express themselves with confidence.

Shirley Young has been teaching ESL/EFL for more than 20 years in Japan and prior to that, 10 years in the Australian public service. For the past 10 she has taught mostly in academic English programmes including Media and Business English and academic writing. She has taught full time at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Beppu University and is now teaching Business English at Fukuoka University. Her interests are in materials development, pronunciation, critical thinking and task-based learning.
