Cooperative Learning and Peer Group Evaluation in College Courses
Cooperative Learning can provide useful and effective structures for English language instruction in the college classroom. A secondary challenge for instructors is how to evaluate the work that is done by students in small groups. One possibility is to use Peer Group Evaluations in conjunction with Cooperative Learning Structures. This presentation will give the evolution of one teacher's approach with two very different groups of learners: chemistry majors at a public university and liberal arts majors at a private school. The objectives, contents, and results of the courses will be presented and participants will be asked to review them in cooperative learning groups and manner. The collective content of the workshop will be shared with interested participants.
Michael Seko has taught Applied English in the Graduate and Undergraduate Schools of Urban Environmental Sciences at Tokyo Metropolitan University since 2002. In 2011 he started teaching English Communication 3 to second-year students at Tamagawa University. He also teaches English to learners from eight months to eighty years of age at TLS English in Yokohama. He holds an M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University and a B.A. in English and Communications from the University of San Francisco.

Cooperative-based Learning Groups (Structured Training and Leadership Roles)
Cooperative Learning has become a common teaching approach for English Language instruction for students in Japan. However, many teachers are finding difficulties in developing effective and productive cooperative learning groups. One problem that is often overlooked for the structuring of cooperative learning groups is how to develop the roles and responsibilities of all members of a given group. This presentation will begin with a brief overview of an original project-based instructional design for one-term (16 lessons) course for the purpose of promoting the learning of English language for specific purposes. Next, language teachers will learn how to structure cooperative learning groups in the language classroom, identify and structure the training of the appropriate roles for leadership of a given group and to effectively train group leadership in the classroom setting on an incremental basis during each lesson. The presentation will conclude with a leadership-guided group-made video project presentation.
Jeff Contreras is an Associate Professor in the Center for Language Teaching at Gunma University. Jeff holds an MA in Educational Administration from University of Arizona and his area of specialization is Project-based Instruction and Cooperative Learning. He is the author of English Language Communication through Project Work and Public Speaking Skills.
