(1) What is Reading Anyway?

Abstract: Extensive Reading proponents say 'Reading is caught, not taught'. But what is it that students are catching? In this presentation, I will review what we know about reading and try to highlight the gaps in our knowledge about what goes on in the process of reading as well as linking it to other skills.

Abstract: Over the past five years, we have been using blogs in writing classes (you can view previous student blogs linked through the Weblogging in Kumamoto (WinK) project, found at winkhome.org) and have added a component for encouraging extensive reading. We'll explain our rationales and methods for incorporating extensive reading materials to writing classes, as well as some of the challenges that we've faced in doing so. We also hope to present a number of ideas for developing an extensive reading library and getting students engaged in extensive reading.
