Movies and television programs can enrich language classrooms in a variety of ways. They can provide students with safe encounters with native speakers' culture, simultaneously giving students a form of real-world experience that can facilitate future interactions within this culture. Although the content can be far messier and less predictable than typical textbook material, these qualities provide opportunities to cultivate guessing strategies and a tolerance of ambiguity. And because these programs are designed to keep viewers from changing the channel, students' motivation to engage will typically be quite high, provided that teachers can frame it in a way that does not frustrate and overwhelm but rather empowers learners to discover strategies they can easily use to make sense of challenging texts.
In this session, we will explore a range of practical techniques for making effective use of movies and television programs in the language classroom, including:
* asking questions that facilitate strategy development;
* assigning simple tasks to make difficult video accessible;
* empowering students to use video programs for autonomous learning;
* preparing for the unpredictable: authentic English vs. textbook English;
* making use of additional authentic materials
Bio: Chris Stillwell has given numerous presentations on video and a range of other teaching issues at JALT, TESOL, and AAAL conferences, and he has written several chapters on using video for language learning for the TESOL Classroom Practices series. He has been teaching ESL/EFL for 16 years, and he is presently assistant director of the Sojo International Learning Center in Kumamoto, Japan.
